View explanation

Infectious mononucleosis (A), secondary to EBV, is usually an acute limited disease which is asssociated with fever, weight loss and malaise giving rise to mild splenomegaly only. CML © causes an accumulation of proliferated myeloid cells, the treatment of thalassaemia (B) involves splenectomy thereby reducing the accumulation of dysfunctional globin chains. Polycythaemia rubra vera (E) can cause an accumulation of RBC which are usually filtered at the spleen. Kala-azar (D) is caused primarily by Leishmania donovani, parasites which enmesh themselves with the spleen and other parts of the reticuloendothelial system causing massive splenomegaly.
