A misdiagnosed case of ADHD ( attention deficit hyperactivity disorder)!

A misdiagnosed case of ADHD ( attention deficit hyperactivity disorder)!!!
A 35 year old female consulted us in FEBRUARY 2020 for teeth cleaning (scaling). We always insist on taking clinical and medical history. The lady used to have severe headaches 2 -3 times in a day for the last 12 years. The pain used to be in and around the eyes, forehead and temple area. It slowly progressed into neck area as well… The pain was also present in muscles of cheek area. The lady had consulted 2 general medicine specialists, 3 ophthalmologists, 3 ENT specialists and 2 Neurologists. They diagnosed it as MIGRAINE and started medication. The medication reduced the pain but didn’t prevent migraine attacks. So, the lady started consulting many specialists for the cure and this habit of hers led to doctors diagnosing her with ADHD disorder (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) and treatment for ADHD also began. This has been going on for last 12 years.
She consulted us for her teeth cleaning (a regular check up). Based on the history given by the lady, we asked her if she had consulted or been to a dentist before. She said she didn’t have any teeth problems so didn’t visit a dentist.
On dental examination, a small decay in her lower right back tooth (47) seen…spasms were noted in cheek area… wisdom teeth were unerupted (one was partially erupted) . TMJ revealed no abnormalities. We advised her for a full mouth xray (OPG).
OPG revealed horizontally impacted wisdom teeth. We suggested her to get those wisdom teeth extracted as they might be causing her the headaches… (Migraine was diagnosed but cause -trigger factor unknown).
The lady agreed and wisdom teeth were extracted in last week of Feb 2020.
The lady visited us today with a gift box and loads of blessings.
It’s been 10 months and not a single episode of migraine!!
Had the pain not relieved, we would have evaluated her occlusion(bite) and occlusal rehabilitation or bite correction done.
Fortunately, it wasn’t required.
The headaches were actually referred pain from the altered musculature due to impacted or unerupted wisdom teeth.
A misdiagnosed case of ADHD!!
The lady is now leading a happy life!!
