Acinetobacter baumanii nosocomial outbreak

Acinetobacter baumanii nosocomial outbreak

Acinetobacter are saprophytic organisms and part of the human commensal flora notoriously know to cause nosocomial infections and outbreaks. These tend to be multi drug resistant (to Beta-lactams, Aminoglycosides, Quinolones)

Although most of the times it is responsible for colonization, invasion and infection can happen with underlying disease and immuno suppression.

Improper disinfection procedures and unhygienic practices on part of the hospital staff (contaminated hands, improper hand hygiene techniques) can cause spread of infection within the ward/hospital.

Prevention:
Infection control measures/ setting up Infection control committee to supervise, train, educate, to conduct surveys and prevent such infections and outbreaks.

Proper disinfection and cleaning of patient area and work benches.

Proper hand hygiene (before and after attending the patient)
