Development of twins during pregnancy
3 weeks of of
The “fake” twins (also called dizygous twins), like the ones shown here, are the most common. Each of the two babies develops in an independent egg (zygote) fertilized by a different sperm as well. Everyone has their own placenta, their own membranes, and their own amniotic bag. Fake twins can be composed of two boys, two girls or a girl and a boy.
4 weeks of of
The twins are small embryos. Their spinal cord tubes are formed. This is from where the brain, spine, spinal cord and nerves will develop. The hearts of twins will start beating as early as 21 days.
8 weeks of of
The main organs of twins are growing quickly. Their hearts beat at 150 beats per minute. Their hands bend to the wrist and their feet lose their glove look.
12 weeks of of
The twins react if your abdomen is stimulated. They are now fully trained.
16 weeks of of
Your babies have their own fingerprints. Their kidneys make urine that is mainly made up of amniotic fluid they swallow. Your children’s gender can now be identified on ultrasound.
20 weeks of of
The twins hair grows on their heads, their skin is covered with a white and white film called vernix caseosa. This one protects both of your babies during their long immersion in amniotic fluid.
24 weeks of of
Small eyebrows are now visible. Dental buds that will welcome the teeth of your babies and adulthood have developed under the gum. The skin is arms because your babies still have to gain weight.

Your twins can open their eyelids that now have lashes. A layer of fat is formed under their skin. Your babies can suck their thumbs, and you can even smell when they have the hiccups.

Nails cover your babies fingers and toes. Arms, legs and bodies continue to grow. Some babies already have their heads covered in hair.
36 weeks of of
About half of the twins are born around week 36 Their lungs continue to grow. The fat layer keeps increasing and babies gaining weight.
