  • Factors that affect callus formation are :-
  1. Motion at fracture site :- Micromotion at fracture site promotes callus formation, on the other hand no movement at fracture site (as with very rigid fixation) or excessive mobility at fracture site impair callus formation.
  2. Oxygen tension :- low oxygen tension due to inadequate supply impairs callus formation chondrocytes form excessive chondroid (cartilaginous) tissue in this situation. Mineralization requires adequate oxygen tension and blood supply.
  3. Compression at fracture site :- Compression at fracture site along with micromovement promotes callus formation. Therefore, distraction at fracture site hampers callus formation.
  4. Stable fixation (not too rigid) with good approximation of fracture fragments promotes callus formation.
  5. All causes of nonunion hampers callus formation.
