GERD is a condition in which retrograde flow of stomach contents into the esophagus causes irritation to the epithelial lining. Symptoms include retrosternal burning pain (heartburn), dysphagia, and a feeling of increased pressure. Can cause esophageal injury and complications (including anemia from chronic bleeding, aspiration pneumonia, and increased risk of esophageal cancer).
