It’s caused by infection with the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It tends to infect warm, moist areas of the body, including the:

-urethra

-eyes

-throat

-vagina

-anus

-female reproductive tract (the fallopian tubes, cervix, and uterus)
