If we compare the job of a CSE officer(top Babu) with top 5% doctors of the nation following common grounds can be used.

  1. Duty or the task in itself. Doctors’ duty is to alleviate suffering borne out of ailments which requires great mental acumen and fine physical(surgical) skills. Bureaucrats’ duty is to alleviate suffering borne out of inefficiency of the system of governance which requires leadership qualities and inter-personal skills. Both are incomparable skill sets.

  2. Money. No doubt the value of the job at an individual level is more for a specialist i.e doctor.

  3. Pleasure of work. Medicine provides gratification on a short term as well as on long term basis but demands hard work and sacrifice. Officer’s job is more or less a file pushing job and a little field work which also requires hard work and sacrifice. But the pleasure is limited as gratification is often delayed, sometimes extending beyond one’s tenure.

  4. Power. Babus yield hard power as they control finances and administration of law and order. Doctors yield soft power as they assert intangible influence. In my opinion soft power is more influential and acts in subtle ways and it is soft power which makes one a leader.
Those who think that a babus signature control lot many lives/things have a very little understanding of power.
