Is India going towards the situation of too many doctors of all categories I.e. GPs

  1. Is India going towards the situation of too many doctors of all categories I.e. GPs, Specialists and Super-specialists? Nowadays there are fellowships even after super-speciality…

All of the doctors want to be concentrated in metros, cities, towns etc… Nobody wants to move to taluqa level or even further…

In my city with a population of around 10 lakh… just 5 years ago there was only one guy from every superspeciality (all types of specialists were there)… but now it’s 5 guys of every SS and there is one hospital of 60 beds where 1 physician and 3 cardiologists are working… This is just one example…

My city has already reached 2000 beds and it’s still increasing and this is counting just the big hospitals… Not the smaller clinics, nursing homes and dispensaries…

The Govt is not helping much by deciding to open GMCs in every district in addition to giving permission to more PMCs … Also they are converting all taluqa hospitals to either 50 or 100 beds some to even 120… Also starting 30 bed hospitals at village level…

  1. Is it time to leave this rat race and focus on becoming more holistic and wholesome ,rather then wasting years in the pursuit of even more degrees?? Earlier an MD or an MS would even treat cardiac, neurological etc problems… But nowadays even they have become branched … Physicians and Surgeons a decade ago would focus on the treatment of the root cause by sticking to the basics rather then ordering unnecessary tests or interventions/ surgeries…

  2. Isn’t it time that doctors have some side business along with having a hospital??

  3. Is it also appropriate to think of moving abroad to some unexplored land like Eastern Europe or Africa , apart from the normal Western or Middle Eastern countries (since they are also beginning to have this similar problem)??

If this trend continues, it’s not long before doctors will have to setup shops like butchers and vendors who have to shout out their produce (in this case speciality) and request customers to come to them.

The Govt should seriously put an effort towards introducing a cadre of Indian Medical Services which would ensure appropriate distribution of doctors and equitable distribution of resources from villages to cities at all levels (primordial, primary , secondary and tertiary) , all sectors (private, government, non profit etc) and in all specialities.

PS- It would be great if someone could answer these questions… Just saying…
