My wife’s credentials:
- IMG YOG: 2014
- Low Step 1 & 2CK scores, 1st attempt
- Passed CS on first attempt
- 1 international publication
- 1 yr worth of USCE (Combination of observerships & externships)
- Applied to 2019 match in IM - didn’t match
She wrote emails to all IM & FM programs regarding vacancies and/or observerships/externship opportunities. Over 1200 emails were sent out in April with little response back from the programs. Beginning of June, a program director of FM program wrote her an email stating they had 1 vacancy and they were interested. She went through an extensive interview with the faculty and residents over the phone. 1 week later, she was offered the position and is now in orientation at the program.
Just because you’ve tried and tried but haven’t received a response, don’t give up. Continue your journey, add to your efforts and your opportunity will come along. After not matching during the regular match, my wife was heartbroken but we worked through it, realigned her motivation and continued to improve her CV by pursuing USCE in the hospital. You’ve made it this far in the process, you’re a few steps away from achieving everything you’ve worked for. Don’t give up!!!
