Lateral pontine syndrome

Lateral pontine syndrome :-
It is due to involvement of AICA( Anterior inferior cerebellar artery)
Ipsilateral manifestation include:-

  • facial nerve involvement: weakness of face
  • CN V : loss of pain and temperature from face
  • Vestibular nerve /nucleus:- vertigo , nausea , horizontal and vertical nystagmus .
  • auditory nerve or cochlear nucleus:- deafness and tinnitus.
  • middle cerebellar peduncle:- ataxia .

Contralateral features:-

  • spinothalamic tract involvement:- loss of pain and temperature from the body .

•Medial pontine syndrome :- it is due to involvement of paramedian branch of the basilar artery .

Ipsilateral manifestation:-

  • CN VI :- diplopia .
  • vestibular nucleus:- nystagmus
  • middle cerebellar peduncle:- ataxia

Contralateral features:-

  • Coticobulbar and Corticospinal tract involvement :- paralysis of face , arm and leg .
  • Medial leminiscus:- loss of touch and proprioception from the body .
