Lupus and Neutrophilic Dermatosis or the Role of Neutrophils in Autoimmune Diseases.
This publication shows an interesting association and underlines the likely fundamental role of the Neutrophil in Autoimmune conditions.
-Indeed neutrophils have a defense mechanism specific to them: they can “sacrifice” their DNA by trapping an exterior antigen by casting their “net” (NET stands in fact for Neutrophil Extracellular Trap).
-This DNA is not normally exposed at the exterior of the cell and thus becomes a target for the immune system. (In lupus mitochondria are likely involved as their DNA is found in NETs)
This case report associating Lupus Erythematosus with Palmoplantar neutrophilic dermatosis also contains a summary of clinical presentations of lupus associated with Neutrophilic Dermatoses .
