Morel-Lavallée Lesion!

Morel-Lavallée Lesion!

👉 Soft tissue cystic lesion resulting from degloving at the junction between the subcutaneous tissues and underlying superficial muscle fascia. This traumatic “separation” of tissues creates a potential space.

👉 The degloving injury is due to shear forces usually related to trauma and less likely liposuction procedure.

👉 The degloving causes injury to small vessels and lymphatics, and thus composed of blood products, lymph, fat globules and debris.

👉 Lesions are common about bony protuberance. This particular case is about the greater trochanter, which is the classic Morel-Lavallée lesion.

👉 Due to blood products, the lesion usually shows high T1 and high T2 signal intensity without fat suppression on MRI. The enhancement is variable, but usually no central enhancement.

👉 Acute cases are treated medically with compression. More chronic cases develop a fibrotic capsule and require surgical intervention and debridement.

👉 Because injury to lymphatics and leakage, the lesion can continue to grow until definite treatment.
