Most of us got angry to see that SDM trying to insult a fellow medico? That doctor stood his ground, but he was an exception.

In all likelihood, the majority of us would have promptly stood before that SDM much before she asked us to do so. Doctors are unconsciously trained to be submissive and devoid of self-respect during their training years. And who does that? Obviously the doctors themselves.

Every time a senior resident, a senior PG or consultant shouts at you, insults you and misbehaves with you in front of the patients, he is basically training you to take more insults and not react, in the feature. What do we do when our seniors misbehave with us? Usually nothing.

We are afraid that they would fail us in the exams, won’t let us complete the PG and so on and so forth. But this fear takes its toll. You lose respect in your own eyes, everytime you fail to stand for yourself. You are ashamed of self and angry at self.

And in psychoanalytic terms , depression is nothing but anger turned inwards, anger towards self. There is a reason why so many promising medicos commit suicide in the initial years of their training.

Soon, many of you will start your PG. Always remember to stand for yourself. Respect your seniors but don’t let them turn you into a spineless, pushover person.
