Here a few FAQ’s regarding Orthopaedics as a future branch -

Q. It’s heard that there is saturation in orthopaedics now. How far is this true ?

— There is no branch which is not saturated these days be it radiology or even any other clinical branch. Trauma is an ongoing process and fractures have always been bread and butter of Ortho surgeons. The more you work hard , the more you are able to carve your niche in it.

Q. What’s the scope in Rural areas ? Why I am asking is that I have heard it’s not much in rural or tier 2/3 cities ?

— There is always scope in every city provided you understand the economics and pulse of patients over there and don’t blunder

Q. What are the future prospects ?

— You can excel in trauma as a whole or channelise yourself into sub specialities like Hand , knee or spine. It’s up to your zeal and passion which drives you to the top level in the field.

Q. Is it advisable to do DNB or diploma ?

— Its always advisable to opt for DNB rather than D Ortho because of many reasons which can’t be explained here. But thesis and overall acceptance of DNB As such is a charm to it rather than Diploma.

Q. How do we compare it with MS Surgery ?

— Orthopaedics is more of a terminal branch which is not requiring MCh inevitably like general surgery. You can settle early and easily. But yes not much of government jobs are available.

Q. How much is the learning curve in orthopaedics ?

— Like any other surgical branch it’s a bit slow and steady but you have to be patient till your beginning of 30’s to have the complete understanding of the surgeries. But that’s doesn’t mean you can’t excel in late 20’s. It all depends upon the kind of people that you train with and under. The word Mentor is most apt for a branch like orthopaedics.

Final Question which is being asked by a special category of students —
Which makes more money - Radio or Ortho ?
Answer is None. I have seen MD RD doing corporate job on package basis and MS Ortho people running full fledged hospitals for which we have many examples pan india. It’s all about quality of life that you want to deal with. If you wish to have a cool and calm life you are a radio person and if adrenaline and stress gives you kick go for clinical branch like medicine or orthopaedics.

In the end do remember -

Scope never lies in the branch , it’s always in the man who’s doing that branch
