Pproximately 40% of patients who are hospitalized for pneumonia develop a parapneumonic effusion

80 years old female presented with malaise & productive cough since 2 weeks. h/o CABG in past, evident by sternotomy sutures are seen. XRAY Shows right middle and lower lobe consolidation is demonstrated. This is associated with right pleural effusion. Above findings are suggestive of PARAPNEUMONIC EFFUSION. PARAPNEUMONIC EFFUSION refers to an exudative pleural effusion associated with pulmonary infection.
→Bacterial cases of pneumonia are a more common cause of parapneumonic effusions than viral cases of pneumonia.
→Approximately 40% of patients who are hospitalized for pneumonia develop a parapneumonic effusion.
