Prerequisites for Forceps Application
• Anesthesia
- General anesthesia
- Epidural (best) or spinal.
- Pudendal nerve block
• Bladder & rectum evacuated
• Complete asepsis
• Cervix
- fully dilated
• Membranes
- ruptured
- (if intact membranes --> may lead
to : slipping or premature
separation of the placenta)
• Presenting part
- Cephalic (vertex or face: MA)
- After-coming head of breech (position should be suitable)
• Head
- engaged
• Pelvis
- no CPD or soft tissue obstruction
• Uterine contractions should be present (to avoid atonic PPH’ge)
