Prerequisites for Forceps Application

• Anesthesia

  • General anesthesia
  • Epidural (best) or spinal.
  • Pudendal nerve block

• Bladder & rectum evacuated

• Complete asepsis

• Cervix

  • fully dilated

• Membranes

  • ruptured
  • (if intact membranes --> may lead
    to : slipping or premature
    separation of the placenta)

• Presenting part

  • Cephalic (vertex or face: MA)
  • After-coming head of breech (position should be suitable)

• Head

  • engaged

• Pelvis

  • no CPD or soft tissue obstruction

• Uterine contractions should be present (to avoid atonic PPH’ge)
