Pros And Cons Of MD Radiology, Suggestions Please

I mean Financially and Job Security, everyone is saying radiology has money, but i cant figure out how?

I mean if u r a consultant, or A.p in a particular department, be it medicine, Paediatrics or radiology, you get the dame pay, how does radiology have this plus point of better pay?

See radiology was a top branch since last decade but gradually it’s coming down…let me tell u some cons of radiology:

  1. U don’t get name and fame of being a doctor
  2. U will be working in diagnostic centres…there u will have fixed salary…now the amount depends usually 1.5lacs
  3. As more number of radiologists come Ur demand will reduce…and also Ur pay…for eg if u are a single radiologist in diagnostic lab u can demand high but as soon as there is another one u can’t demand high pay as the employer will obviously select the other radiologist with lesser pay
  4. U need huge investment for opening own diagnostic centre
  5. Even if u open no surety it will run full fledged
  6. U are dependent on other clinicians for referrals and u have to give them share for that
  7. Unless u have a successful private setup Ur earning wont increase much…like max 3lpm even after 10yrs down the line

Sir… If someone is weak in Anatomy persay/don’t like Anatomy, how challenging will be this subject?

  1. Lack of fame and recognition
  2. Lack of bedside patient interaction
  3. Never as much money as superspecialised surgeons or doctors (without starting a business)
  4. Other doctors refuse to give you a proper history because people do not understand that without clinical history, a radiologist is a very bad radiologist.
  5. A LOT of academics. Probably the highest among all subjects because you’re almost studying all subjects.

Pros:

  1. Awesome academics and the opportunity to play around with all subjects.
  2. Insane job satisfaction if you like diagnostics and no headache about the treatment and response - except in cases where the imaging is altered by treatment! See, it’s endless!
  3. The opportunity to see rare cases from every clinical subject.
  4. You can stop emergency work after training - leads to a more relaxed work life balance.
  5. Still very good money but with an upper ceiling, especially in a tier 1 city.
  6. Can switch cities without worrying about patient pool because you essentially have a office job type of situation although your networking will suffer.
  7. The ability to play around with a lot of new tech especially in intervention and MRI.
  8. The opportunity to have your own centre with a lot of income potential if you’re successful.

Look, if you’re coming only for the money, choose surgery or obgy or medicine.

If you want academics, a relaxed life and are somewhat tech savvy, Radio is great.

Radiology is ALL about anatomy albeit in many ways different from the way you studied anatomy in first year. But there’s no escaping anatomy in radiology.

Advantages :
Highly paid
Less risky
No emergencies
No much tension involved
Easy job opportunities

Disadvantages :
Setting up your own centre will be very expensive
Finest nuances in every speciality should be known
Other doctors should refer cases to you
