The Many Faces of Alzheimer’s
Stories from patients, caregivers, doctors, scientists and industry leaders will be shared as part of a discussion about the challenges of developing new therapies in an interactive and engaging conversation about the many perspectives of Alzheimer’s disease at an Oct.10 HUBweek panel sponsored by Harvard Medical School Executive Education.
The panel, Alzheimer’s Disease: Voices from The Front Lines , is part of a full-day forum titled The Future of Health, Wellness and Medicine that will run from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Center Stage at The HUB Presented by Liberty Mutual at Boston City Hall Plaza.
The thought-provoking session will feature HMS faculty members with extensive backgrounds in Alzheimer’s research and care. The interactive discussion will focus on representing diverse aspects of the Alzheimer’s care and discovery community, many of which are often overlooked.
Stanley Shaw, HMS associate dean for executive education will serve as the moderator for this interactive conversation along with colleagues Reisa Sperling, HMS professor of neurology and director of the Center for Alzheimer Research and Treatment at Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Mark Albers, Frank Wilkens Jr. and Family Endowed Scholar in Alzheimer’s Disease Research and Peter Sorger, HMS professor of system biology and director of the Harvard Program in Therapeutic Sciences (HITS).
Alzheimer’s Disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States and cases are projected to double within the next 30 years, which will more than triple the current health care expenditures. The disease exerts a tremendous toll on the individuals it affects, as well as those who care for them, both family and healthcare professionals.
The session will discuss the progress made towards diagnosing the earliest stages of the disease, the discoveries that are changing the way we understand the causes of Alzheimer’s, what the next wave of therapies will look like and what we can learn from the perspectives of Alzheimer’s patients.
HUBweekis an annual event organized by Harvard University, Massachusetts General Hospital, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and The Boston Globe. The 2018 event,titled We the Future , will be held from Oct. 8-14 and will focus on the intersection of art, science and technology.
