The Medical Council of Canada (MCC) wishes to respond to the concerns that have been put forward in relation to use of and access to menstrual products during its exams. We sincerely regret any frustration that this has caused.

The MCC does not have a policy on the use of and access to menstrual products during its exams. As is the case with other high-stakes exams, we have practices in place to preserve the security and integrity of the exam. In accordance with these, personal items such as purses, bags and backpacks are not permitted in the exam area. These are stored securely by the onsite staff and can be accessed on request. Test-takers can request to use the washroom facilities and to have access to personal items that they may need. In these instances, they are accompanied by a member of the exam staff to access their personal items.

The MCC has committed to a review of its current practices, and we are fully committed to the principles of fairness, equity and transparency. A group is being established to review current practices and we look forward to collaborating with learners to identify opportunities for improvements in these practices moving forward.
