After my GMC registration, I gave my first job interview when I was 5.5 months pregnant. I had not mentioned that I was pregnant during the interview but when I got the offer letter I did let them know that I was pregnant. When the whole process of clearance was done I was 7 months pregnant. Of course it meant that I had to go on maternity leave soon (I did work 1 week until my due date).
So my situation is this, the consultant/clinical director l who hired me behaved very strangely with me the whole time I was working, bordering on spite, condescension and sarcasm. He once admitted in a humorous way that he got into a lot of problems because he had hired me. For which I profusely apologised.
Fast forward when I got my next job I added him as my referee, he did not bother to reply any of my mails (neither affirmation nor negation) or my employer’s mails even after multiple attempts.
I then had to change my referee to another consultant who was kind enough to give me reference quickly and kindly (god bless that man)
I feel that I have gone through unnecessary stress and unfair treatment and was wondering if there was anything I could do so that nobody else goes through the same in the future.
