ANAESTHESIA as a career.
Pros -
- wide spectrum of choices you get after finishing MD/DNB , you can go for DM , idccm or other fellowships for cardiac ax , Neuro ax , transplant ax , pediatric Ax, upcoming obstetric ax , interventional pain specialist , critical care medicine
- high demand and evergreen subject
- easy for early settlement.
- you will get to do procedures , you will be heading trauma centres , you will be master in resuscitation and the feeling you get when you are called to save the patient when every other measures have failed.
- fairly good work life balance , you don’t have any ward to watch over or follow up , you are free when OT is done and all the patients are stable whereas the surgeons will be doing the regular follow up
- lots of gadgets to work with like USG guided blocks , central line , TEE , latest Anaesthesia workstations , invasive monitoring devices to name a few
CONS -.
- less recognition among public , but you are highly respected among medical fraternity and the corporates know they can’t function without Anaesthesiologist
- salary and earning has a ceiling effect although if you are doing freelancing then sky is the limit
- some of the places , surgeons and anaesthesia clashes still goes on but it has changed a lot nowadays and things will get only better.
