Arterial claudication:

Location of pain: Buttock, thigh, or calf muscles and rarely the foot

Characteristic discomfort: Cramping, aching, fatigue, weakness, or frank pain

Onset relative to exercise: After some degree of exercise

Effect of rest: Quickly relieved

Effect of body position: None

Other characteristics: Reproducible

Spinal stenosis(Neurogenic Claudication):

Location of pain: Hip, thigh, buttocks (follows dermatome)

Characteristic discomfort: Motor weakness more prominent than pain

Onset relative to exercise: After walking or standing for variable lengths of time

Effect of rest: Relieved by stopping only if position changed

Effect of body position: Relief by lumbar spine flexion (sitting or stooping forward)

Other characteristics: Frequent history of back problems, provoked by intra-abdominal pressure

Venous claudication:

Location of pain: Entire leg, but usually worse in thigh and groin

Characteristic discomfort: Tight, bursting pain

Onset relative to exercise: After walking

Effect of rest: Subsides slowly

Effect of body position: Relief quicker by elevation

Other characteristics: History of iliofemoral deep venous thrombosis, signs of venous congestion, edema
