Brain Fog Isn’t Necessarily a Sign of Old Age or Stress

Brain fog is a very common symptom. In patients over the age of 40, I find them referring to their brain fog as a sign of ‘old age’. They often call it having a ‘senior moment’.

My 20 and 30 year old patients can’t blame their brain fog on old age, so they definitely know that something is wrong. They tend to blame it on ‘stress’.

Basically, if we can put the blame of a bothersome symptom on something, we tend to feel better about it. Stress is a great one because pretty much everyone agrees that it’s present, it’s too abundant, and it’s creating bad effects. What if the ‘senior moment’ had nothing to do with age and what if the foggy thinking and poor memory had nothing to do with stress, or at least not the life stress you’re thinking about?

In other words, what if the brain fog, poor memory and simply feeling less smart is coming from something that is truly irritating and inflaming your brain and nervous system? And what if there was a solution? And what if that solution was easy and drug-free?
What’s the Solution?

What most people don’t realize is that gluten affects the nervous system and brain more often than it affects the gut. Gluten directly causes inflammation of the nervous system, including the brain whether the patient suffers from celiac disease or gluten sensitivity.

Often, patients come to me with nervous system issues that they have already discovered are caused by gluten. But when they are relating these symptoms and its gluten causation, they refer to themselves as ‘odd’ or ‘unusual’ because they think they’re in the minority. Nothing could be farther from the truth and I let them know that. The number of nervous system symptoms potentially caused by gluten are vast.

They include such problems as:

• depression

• anxiety

• migraines

• joint and body pain

• ataxia – feeling unbalanced

• seizures

• foggy brain

• poor memory

• and more.

Foggy brain can also be caused by chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. I’m not saying that every ‘foggy brain’ has gluten intolerance as its sole root cause, but it is interesting to note that gluten can not only cause the symptom directly, it is often a culprit in the development of the associated conditions, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and other autoimmune diseases.
How Gluten Intolerance & the Adrenal Glands Play a Role

Gluten intolerance causes a poor conversion of food to fuel. That puts particular stress on the part of the body that requires a stable blood sugar level to function, the adrenal glands. Overtaxed adrenals glands create such symptoms as are seen in chronic fatigue as well as fatigue in general.

Other symptoms seen with adrenal insufficiency are:

• Poor sleep

• Allergies

• Achy joints

• Mood swings and depression

• Hormonal imbalances – such as PMS, libido issues, menopausal problems, etc.

• Weakened immune system

And more…
