Can they be counter productive?

Hi everyone. New to this group. My story started two weeks ago when I suffered a really excruciatingly painful knee injury. (Probably the most painful physical feeling ever as you all are probably familiar with)

Two weeks ago i was playing basketball when I drove in, collided and twisted my knee and fell to the floor. I heard a ripping sound as I fell. I knew it wasn’t good.

Fast forward two weeks later, after the swelling went down, I still can’t put any weight or fully extend my knee. If I try the pain is so bad it makes me stop.

I saw my doctor yesterday and he told me I had free range of motion. And to do exercises like bend my knee back and forth multiple times a day. Only problem is that it hurts like hell after I do it. He also ordered these excercises without knowing the extend of my injury. I’m getting an MRI done tomorrow to know the full extent of my damages. But can excercise to try and obtain full range of motion be counter productive, given he doesn’t know the exact extent of my damages? I feel like I may have torn my quad muscles connecting my knee.

Should I continue the exercises or stop.
Can they be counter productive?

Any advice and tips are very appreciated. What can I expect in my recovery going forward? I’ll keep you updated on my mri results tomorrow.
