Difference between deep vein thrombosis edema and filariasis edema

In the initial stages of lymphedema, leg swelling will be similar to venous insufficiency (soft and pitting). Extension of oedema into the foot to the origin of the toes may help differentiate lymphedema from venous oedema. The inability to pinch skin on the toes (Stemmer sign) may also differentiate early lymphedema from venous oedema. Subsequently in lymphedema, the limb becomes wooden as progressive deposition of protein rich fluid causes induration and fibrosis of affected tissues. Lymphedema increases production of subcutaneous and adipose tissue, thickening the skin. In cases of lymphedema, advanced disease may be identified when the leg feels wooden, oedema is no longer pitting, and the limb is enlarged; the skin may appear verrucous at the toes.

Thank you.
