DNB Round 2 - 2020 Results

DNB Round 2 results were published yesterday. An analysis below (also see pic)

  1. Closing rank shifts were minimal as has been extensively discussed in all groups by now.

  2. Internal shifts at seat level were decent (though possibly there were high expectations). I am sure many wouldn’t agree, but at seat level (for UR) 75% of seats had a positive shift. Average shift at seat level for Radio was around 490 ranks, Ortho was 900 ranks while the rest all shifted by at least 1000 ranks. General surgery - the average of seat level shift was 2600 ranks.

  3. Approx 60% of candidates who held seats in DNB R1 should have moved to better seats, though the better seat may not have been as expected.

  4. However around 20% of seats had a negative shift, which is a surprising phenomenon and may have impacted candidates.

  5. The above numbers from 2) to 5) take the impact of internal movements. However the closing ranks did not move much, or rather the shifts were not high at closing rank level.1355 candidates who were not allotted in DNB R1, were first time allotted in DNB R2.
Of these 1096 did not hold an AI R2 seat, and impact is majorly due to this set (See pic for possible reasons). Some of these, possibly a decent number to be State R1 seat holders, possibly looking at State R2 options - may be that set of vacancies can be expected in DNB R3 (if State r2s are complete before DNB R3).

NBE has to be thanked majorly for 2 reasons (at least by those who had internal movements) - Bringing the locking rule, and the AI R2 joined removal rule, without which at least 912 choices would have been processed by default, and those candidates’ rejected seats may not have been vacancies and denying us whatever movements that have happened now (would have resulted in negative shifts otherwise). AI R2 list based removal was a real surprise, and was excellent.

Hope the impact of this is visible in closing ranks in Round 3, with State R2 joined are not eligible rule being in place.
