During pregnancy the dominance of Navicular cells in clusters ( small intermediate cells with the elongated nuclei) and plenty of lactobacillus.

Cytohormonal study of vaginal epithelium

  1. para basal and basal layer
  • has small round and basophilic cells
  • present due to lack of hormonal activity
  • seen in childhood until puberty and in Menopause with atrophy
    2.intermediate cells layer
    -transparent and basophilic cells
    -present due to progesterone, androgen & corticosteroid
  • seen at pregnancy and at an early transition of menopause
  1. superficial cell layer
    -large cells with pyknotic nucleus, acidophillic on staining
    -present due to oestrogen
    -seen in the reproductive period and pre ovulatory phase
