During thyroidectomy Inferior thyroid artery is ligated close to or away from the gland?
saw an update saying it is close. wanted to confirm.
It is ligated close to gland… to avoid hindrance of blood supply to parathyroids
Both superior & inferior thyroid arteries are clamped close to the gland…
Isn’t it away from gland for inf thyroid artery??
ITA is never ligated.only it’s capsular terminal branches are ligated. Becuz the major supply of parathyroid is ITA and it’s ligation may cause ischemia of parathyroid.
Because it supplies parathyroids also it’s d reason
You won’t ligate it. Hypocalcemia will set in as s/e since it supplies parathyroid also
Both inferior and superior ligated close to d gland
