Esthesioneuroblastoma

ESTHESIONEUROBLASTOMA
Also known as olfactory neuroblastoma or olfactory placode tumor.

  • Arises from olfactory epithelium in upper 1/3rd of the nose
    Clinical features:
  • Bimodal age distribution: 10-20 and 50-60yrs
  • unilateral nasal obstruction and epitaxis are the presenting features
    Findings: Friable cherry red, polypoidal mass in the upper third of the Nasal cavity.
  • It is a vascular tumor and biopsy should not be immediately attempted unless imaging studies have been done. Image studies show the extent of the lession and biopsy reveals the true nature of the tumor.
    Treatment: Surgery can be combined with preoperative chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
