Hello achievers of Neet PG 2022,

Hello achievers of Neet PG 2022,

So as a 6 years DrNB Neurosurgery Resident, I just participated in a Neurosurgery conference - Young Neurosurgeons Forum, 2022 organised by Neurosurgical society of India.

There was a discussion about the 3 vs 6 year course. I also met a few great Neurosurgeons from India. Almost everyone has preferred the shift of 3 years trends to 6 years.

Overview of years of Neurosurgical training,

UK - 8 years

USA - 7 years

Europe - 6 to 8 years

Western - 6 to 7 years

Australia - 5 to 9 years

Do you think they are all slow learners?

Each Neurosurgeon emphasized on the fact that actual learning and real journey of being a neurosurgeon started after they completed residentship. Degree just bought them licence to practice. So don’t think that"hands on" in residentship is everything. But it’s very important, and at >90% places, you will learn enough Basics to survive over “6 long years.”

If you are concerned about Mch vs DrNB degree, just compare the salaries of people working in the same setting with the same experience… (Please have enough sample size to conclude).

If you want to seek advice, talk to practicing Neurosurgeons and please not other subject experts. Generally I have seen strong discouragements towards it… Don’t know why!!!

But guys, it’s the toughest speciality to work. There’s no option but to keep on working. Know about all pros and cons before joining and decide. You must be 101% sure that it’s the love of your life. Even if 1% doubt you might like something else too, always choose General surgery and then decide.

To know more, you can always contact me. (Instagram is most preferred : drdboghani) I may reply late, but I definitely will. Constructive criticism or difference of opinion is always good, but no hatred comments please.

Best wishes for your branch selection. Choose wisely - there’s no divorce!

Great insights Dr Dhairy. As pointed out by you, the most important point for a student while taking a 6 year course is to be 101% sure that they want to do that branch. It should be avoided, if it’s an afterthought or a compromised decision.
