Hepatitis C virus infection

  • New HCV infection is usually asymptomatic
  • 30% of them spontaneously resolved within 6 months
  • 70% develop chronic infection
  • out of this 70%, around 20% develops liver cirrhosis within 20 years

WHO recommends:

  • to screen everyone at increased risk
  • treat all persons with chronic HCV infection over the age of 12
