How are fibroadenomas treated?

Options for management include biopsy with clinical follow up, surgical excision, or follow up with clinical exam and ultrasound to assure stability over a two-year period. In the past, most fibroadenomas were surgically excised, but now it is reasonable to consider observation with an exam and ultrasound every six months to two years in cases of small (less than 2cm) benign appearing fibroadenomas. If a suspected fibroadenoma becomes painful or increases in size, surgical excision is recommended.
