Despite being a small country, United Kingdom offers promising opportunities for Pakistani doctors. GP (general practitioner) is the most highly sought field for easy life style and highest pay, most of the fields are open to expats. It takes about 5 years to get the passport on tier 2 visa. After that your chances of getting a training post are very good. Keep in mind that it is not that important to be on the training post. Particularly in medicine, you can work and gain experience and you can appear in exam when u think you are ready. Same goes for surgery, you can work and appear in FRCS as three referees are required for the exam. Nobody cares if you are trained in uk or abroad or not even trained as long as your form is ticking all boxes. Any FCPS can go and take that exam, be sure you are ready as there are only 3 chances.

How to enter the medical practice in United Kingdom.

To work in uk, you need to be registered with General Medical Council (GMC). There are several ways you can get gmc registration.

  1. Plab: For fresh graduate plab is a pretty affordable option. Part1 costs £155. Part 2 cost £840 (used to be 450). Requirement for part 1 is IELTS WITH.7.5 band in all 4 modules. For part 2 you need to take a preparation course. There are various courses available and they are all ok. There is on in Liverpool that offer you stay with the course and you pay later when you are done.

  2. Alternate route: There are various degrees that will give exemption from Plab (but not IELTS). These include MRCS, MCPS & FCPS (in Psychiatry, Anaesthesia, Medicine and Paediatrics).

  3. Referencing/sponsor: This is another way to get GMC registration without taking any exam. You need a sponsor from Uk, generally a consultant and another sponsor from Pakistan who is also a GMC registered consultant. You still need IELTS. This route is not for people like us. This is the route for the good for nothing children of Professors and this how they get training in UK.
    The registration fee for GMC is 200 if applied within 2 years of passing MBBS and 390 afterwards.
