Whipple’s disease is caused by Tropheryma whipplei.
There is massive infiltration of lamina propria by foamy macrophages
Variable acute inflammation is seen.

Organisms stain with PAS. Can also be identified with PCR.
(Negative for FITE and AFB, helping differentiate from MAI)
