Oronal section of the anal canal -

oronal section of the anal canal -
• The anal canal extends from the rectum (inferior rectal valve) to the anal orifice.
• Anal columns are longitudinal mucosal folds in the upper anal canal.
• Anal valves are mucosal folds at the inferior end of the anal columns.
• Anal sinuses are transverse mucosal furrows between anal valves.
• Anal glands are located between the internal and external anal sphincters and drain into the anal sinuses.
• The anal pecten (transitional zone) lies between the dentate line and the anocutaneous line.
• Above the pecten, the epithelium is columnar. Below the pecten, it is keratinized squamous epithelium.
• A complex sphincter system ensures fecal continence.
