Pictorial representation (created in Photoshop; Adobe Inc, San Jose, CA) of the fetal female pelvis and inguinal canal. Both the fetal gubernaculum and the canal of Nuck arise from the peritoneal space and course through the inguinal canal to the labia majora. The midportion of the fetal gubernaculum attaches to the uterine horn and connects the uterus to the ovary and to the labia majora.

Figure 2

Pictorial representation of the postnatal female pelvis and inguinal canal showing an abnormally patent canal of Nuck. The fetal gubernaculum has developed into the postnatal ovarian ligament

and roundligament.

Figure 3

Pictorial representation of the postnatal female pelvis and inguinal canal with an encysted hydrocele arising due to arrested obliteration of the canal of Nuck along its superior aspect. The canal of Nuck normally closes from a superior-to-inferior fashion, as shown by the direction of the black arrow.
