Prevention of measles

PREVENTION OF MEASLES

  • Measles vaccine,
  • vitamin A (single dose with the vaccine)
    (immune enhancer).
    TREATMENT OF MEASLES
    ✓ For cases:
    -symptomatic e.g. eye care,
    -care of feeding,
    -antibiotics for 2ry infection,
    -vitamin A —> 100.000-200.000 IU single oral dose reduce measles morbidity in malnourished , immunodeficiency and in infants aged 6 months to 2 years.
    ✓ For contacts:
    passive immunization with measles immunoglobulin ( 0.5 ml/kg , IM ):
    1-If given within 6 days of exposure :
    Prevent the disease but vaccine is needed two months later “seroprevention” .
    **Indicated in:
    • Immunodificient contacts
    • Infants less than 6 months of non immune mothers.
      2-If given after 6 days of exposure :
      attenuate the virus —> mild disease plus immunity “seroattenuation” .
