Pseudomembrane colitis disease

1.What is the difference between Clostridium and Clostridioides?

2.Pseudomembrane colitis disease is developed after taking broad spectrun antibiotics…why doesn’t it kill C.difficile also?

Changing the name of a bacterium is a long thought out process. When molecular methods revealed the diversity of the species from the Clostridium species, it was decided to take a conservative approach to give a name that sounded similar to Clostridium. Obviously all antibiotics cannot kill all bacteria since they have varying spectra.

Antibiotics kills many gut bacteria and alters the flora of gut. Thus, when spores/cl. difficle enters Gut it does not have any competition left. It proliferates and releases toxins and if persons immune system becomes weak…it leads to pseudomemb colitis. In layman terms, Cl. difficle is a very tough bacteria…its resistant to many antibiotics and even resistent to gastric acid.
