(a) Thin-walled needle introduced percutaneously into blood vessel.
(b) Guidewire passed through needle and advanced into blood vessel.

(d) Skin puncture site enlarged with No. 11 scapel blade.
(e) Catheter advanced over guidewire into blood vessel.
(f) Guidewire withdrawn leaving catheter in situ.
