Splenic artery aneurysm, How do you treat?

The indications for treatment of SAA:

  1. SAA > 2 cm.
  2. Enlarging = rapidly increasing.
  3. Symptomatic.
  4. Child-bearing age.
  5. Cirrhosis.
  • Surgical intervention is indicated in 2, 3, 4, 5 regardless of SAA size.
  • Treatment options:
  1. Endovascular or catheter technique: minimally invasive but with optimal outcomes.
  2. Stenting: the stent excludes blood flow to the aneurysm and channels it through the stent.
  3. Traditional surgery: [open or laparoscopic]:
  • To close off the artery with a clip or ligature.
  • Splenectomy may be necessary especially if the aneurysm lies very close to the spleen.
