Placenta-Fetal Surface
→ At term, four-fifth of the placenta is of fetal origin.
→ The umbilical cord is attached at or near its center.
→ Fetal side is formed by chorion frondosum.
→ The fetal surface is shiny, grey in color and covered with shining amnion.

→ The maternal surface is dull red in color and rough.
→ A cotyledon or lobule is the functional unit of placenta
→ Maternal side is formed by decidua basalis.
→ The maternal portion of the placenta is one-fifth of the total placenta.
→It has 10-38 convex polygonal areas called as lobes.
