Take full responsibility for your training

TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR TRAINING

Your training is YOUR training. No one else can train to be a GP or Consultant for you – YOU have to put in the effort, pass the exams, complete the assessments and keep yourself motivated. It is all too easy to rely on others to carry us through – being passed from one supervisor to another, one job to another, expecting that everything will be pointed out to us - expecting that someone will guide us through the hoops and that they will make sure we come out the other end.

This is a recipe for disaster. Everyone else that you rely on has their own lives to look after, their own family to think of and their own circumstances to manage. The only person who is going to get you to the end is YOU.

Make a decision to take responsibility for everything that you do. Decide that YOU are solely responsible for making sure that you do the job that you are supposed to, that YOU are responsible for learning what you need to learn, that YOU are responsible for the actions that you do or don’t take. Once you have developed this clear mindset, it feels liberating.

All of a sudden, you make decisions that appear best for YOU - not for the system or your trainers. YOU decide what your needs are, and YOU focus on how you will fulfill them. YOU decide on how you are going to overcome the various assessments and exams - not how everyone else chooses to. YOU realise what you don’t know and YOU go and work on it – not wait for someone to tell you.

The days of being spoon-fed ended a long time ago. In a few years you will be an independent GP or Consultant who will be out there on your own. If you are already taking responsibility for your training, fantastic – there are many who THINK they are, but few who truly do. We are all responsible for our actions – we all have a mind to decide what to do and how to do it. Use this power to create your own path – take the responsibility on your shoulders and completely thrive on it.

“You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today.” Abraham Lincoln
