A 25-year-old woman complaining of cyclic dysmenorrhea and pain with intercourse. A sonogram reveals bilateral adnexal masses, and a laparoscopy shows chocolate cysts. This patient at risk for developing which of the following conditions?
A blood-filled chocolate cyst is characteristic of endometriosis, a condition that results in non-neoplastic endometrial glands/stroma abnormally located out- side the uterus. The ovary is one of the most common sites, and the cysts are formed from cyclic bleeding from the tissue, mimicking menstruation. Severe menstrual-related pain and infertility are possible complications of endometriosis.
