Types of Necrosis

Types of Necrosis

There are mainly 2 type of necrosis, coagulative necrosis and liquefactive necrosis.

What is coagulative necrosis?

In this type of necrosis the cells are dead but the outline and architecture of the cells is preserved atleast for a few days. The reason for this is that the cause of cell injury is denaturation of proteins. During denaturation not only the structural proteins but also the enzymatic proteins get denatured. As a result of that there are no enzymes to degrade the cell as a result of which the architecture of the cell is maintained. This is coagulative necrosis.

What are the examples of coagulative necrosis?
Remember that ischemic injury in all organ except the brain will result in coagulative necrosis. If there is ischemia or hypoxia in the brain it will result in liquefactive necrosis.
