Controlled trials have demonstrated that balloon tamponade is as effective as pharmacotherapy & endoscopic therapy in controlling acute variceal bleeding.
-
The major advantages of variceal tamponade using this tube are immediate cessation of bleeding in more than 85% of patients and the widespread availability of this device.
-However, there are also significant disadvantages of balloon tamponade, including frequent recurrent hemorrhage in up to 50% of patients after balloon deflation, considerable discomfort for the patient, and a high incidence of serious complications when it is used incorrectly by a in-experienced health care provider.
