These are my words as an anesthesiology resident… watever i am saying today is from 1.5 yrs of my personal experience in this field and after discussion with senior residents and experienced faculty members practicing for years in this field of Anesthesiology and Critical care… Maybe this will be a long post and a must read for pg aspirants and even non medicos…
- Anesthesiologists are perioperative physicians concerned with pre anesthetic checkup and maintenance of intra op vitals , administering anesthesia, along with post operative follow up… So Basically the speciality is a misnomer… its not only abt putting patient to sleep, but checking all risks and benefits of surgery… Without which the patient can die in the operating table…
- Yes, It is 97% boredom, 3% panic… the split seconds of adrenaline rush… u have 60 seconds to resuscitate, to secure airway, to tackle emergencies. Or u end up losing the patient…
- It encompasses intensive care, critical care, pain medicine… intensive care is flourishing… And soon it will be realized without a trained intensivist it is not possible to save critically ill patients…
- Anesthesia is directly proportional to the growth of health care infrastructure… In developed countries, it is one of the top branches… Mark my word , 20-30 yrs from now Anesthesia will be one of the demanding branches in India, when people will realize the importance of anesthesia, and they will get to choose their own anesthesiologist…
- Yes we are deprived , people barely know us… we dont want fame and glory… Our happiness lies in the fact that the patient is unaware of all the catastrophes inside the OT, the falling bp, deranged erectrolytes, massive hemorrhage, deteriorating arterial blood gas, post op ventilation… By some miracle all these are managed by some unknown doctor and the patient wakes up to see that somehow he managed to survive…
- To all the newcomers , planning to join anesthesia… There will b days wen u will feel disappointed, u will feel pathetic,. Seeing all the negativity around… . but remember it is u and only u… who is the last hope for some patients… U r the thin line between life and death… !!!
