What is the outlook for patients with glomerulonephritis (GN)?

There are different outcomes for GN patients. The condition goes away without treatment in some people with GN but this is rare. Other people with GN can have long periods of time with no symptoms, but then flare-ups may occur. Depending on the type of GN and the type of treatment needed, some patients can have kidney function improve with treatment. Others may just find that the kidneys stop getting worse. If the GN is severe or caught too late, some patients may develop kidney failure either quickly when the GN is first discovered, or over the course of years. If kidney failure develops, patients may be eligible for a kidney transplant. Patients with GN need to visit the doctor for regular check-ups.
