Choosing your specialty

CHOOSING YOUR SPECIALTY

Choosing your specialty is a completely personal choice.

Some are sure. Some are unsure

A lot of doctors are sure about their specialty of choice. Some choose their specialty during or even before starting medical school. But a lot of doctors remain unsure about this.

Some change their minds

A lot of doctors who were sure about their specialty in the past, decide to change their specialty before or even after starting their training.

Choices are based on exposure.

Most doctors choose their specialty based on what they have seen, read or heard. It is very difficult to choose a specialty that they have not been exposed to.

More exposure can lead to better choices

This is why it might be a good idea to keep your options open, until you have started working the NHS to gain more exposure. You might come across more specialties that do not exist back home. Also, you might notice that even the specialties you are familiar with, work very differently in the NHS.

Taster Weeks

A taster week is designed to increase your exposure to any specialty. This can help you in the decision-making process when choosing your specialty training. You can get taster weeks in any specialty.

Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day

Of course, if you still feel the same love and passion for the specialty you had chosen back home, go for it. Go for the specialty you love and not the specialty which seems easy to get into or might seem to have a better work-life balance.

Bottom line: Do not be in a rush. Take your time. Make your decision wisely.
