The axillary nerve leaves the axilla through the quadrangular space

The axillary nerve leaves the axilla through the quadrangular space and winds around humerus on deep surface of the deltoid muscle and passes approximately 7 cm below tip of acromion. Injury to the nerve may occur when posterior portals during shoulder arthroscopy are made inferior. Injury to the nerve can cause pain, weakness and decreased sensation over the lateral arm and shoulder.
